Speake-Marin is a brand for very particular fake watch connoisseurs. We've covered its novel concepts like the Triad with the Eros movement and the "topping tool?mystery rotor. We've also covered more traditional designs like the Spirit Pioneer, which undertakes themes on military design. Speake-Marin's latest release is its take on the tourbillon and is aptly named the Magister Tourbillon.
This might sound like a strange likeness, but the Magister Tourbillon (and really any Speake-Marin model) has a very Joules Verne-like feel to it (I'm well aware that Peter Speake-Marin is English). What I mean is that it's one of those replica watches for "extraordinary gentlemen??such as Max Büsser whose wrist we spotted here.
There are healthy contradictions between old and new motifs on the Magister Tourbillon. First of all, it's actually called the Magister (a master/professor at a medieval university). It has slim, serif numerals but the case comes in at a modern 42 mm. It has exposed hardware (the tourbillon at 6 o'clock) but on an enamel dial. The lugs are sizable and functional, as is the outsize crown. The Piccadilly case is highly polished and yet resembles the contours of a maritime window. The tourbillon cage is sleekly sculpted, for added visibility through the watch.
The fusion of old and new doesn't stop on the exterior. The automatic SM3 caliber inside the Magister Tourbillon utilizes rhodium-plated German silver bridges and a 950 platinum micro-rotor ?and yet, only dressage (wonderful dressage) adorns the movement. Its decoration is geared to accentuate functionality (which, by the way, is 72 hours of reserve at 21,600 bph). The stark choice of classical functionality is very Speake-Marin. The Magister may be a sculpted gentleman's watch, but closer inspection would reveal its finely-tuned, expeditionary spirit.
